44-year-old local man charged with DUI in Canton

CANTON, CT – On Friday night, 44-year-old Alex Ponomarov was charged with driving under the influence after a deadly accident closed a stretch for Rt. 44 in Canton.

He was driving westbound on Rt. 44 and was trying to make a left turn onto Old Albany Turnpike, said police.

According to the police, Ponomarov’s vehicle hit the left side of a vehicle traveling eastbound sending the driver and 2 kids in that vehicle to Hartford Hospital and Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. A 3rd vehicle was also damaged from the front-end and the driver was taken to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington.

Prior to the accident, a witness saw Ponomarov’s vehicle operating erratically, said the police.
