48-year-old man arrested in Darien for DUI
A Trumbull man was arrested on the suspicion of drunk driving by a Darien police officer early Monday.
48-year-old Ronald Cioppa of Trumbull was arrested by a Darien police officer on the suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to reports, the incident took place shortly before 2 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 14. The driver had stopped by the side of the road when his tire became flat. The rim of his vehicle was also damaged. An officer spotted the man’s car parked on the driveway to Ox Ridge School and approached him.
The police officer, who was on patrol, spotted the 2011 Infinity M37X car stopped on the school driveway. The incident report confirmed that the front right tire was flat and the vehicles rim was damaged.
The driver was outside the vehicle standing next to it. He told the officer that something was wrong with his vehicle and he couldn’t drive it away. However, the officer noticed Cioppa seemed unsteady on his feet. He also had slurred speech.
The Darien police officer conducted some field sobriety tests which he failed. Cioppa was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol and taken into custody.
Cioppa, who is a resident of Fernwood Road in Trumbull posted a $250 bond and was scheduled to appear in state Superior Court in Stamford on January 23.
Police never found out just what caused the tire to go flat and the rim to be damaged.
