West Hartford pediatrician Christine Cornachio arrested for DUI with children in car
On Monday night, West Hartford pediatrician Christine Cornachio was taken into custody in Canton for driving under the influence with her 2 children in the vehicle. Prior to the arrest, she was suspected of being under the influence by the owner and a customer of AM Citgo, at 954 Main Street, in Winsted.
The owner of the gas station and convenience store, Asim Ansari said, “When she pulled into our parking lot, she drove her car over the sidewalk, into some milk crates and then pushed the ice cooler three or four feet. We thought she was going to hit our building”. She then went into the convenience store to use the restroom and bought some products from there. Ansari said he observed that something was wrong with her.”I told her let me call the police to help you. She said I’m not drunk and left”.
An Emergency Department doctor at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, who happened to be a customer visiting the store, attempted to convince Cornachio outside the store not to get back in her vehicle and drive especially with children seated in the vehicle.
Chief Robert Scannell of the Winsted Police Department said, “Once she was alerted by the witness that they had called the police, she fled the scene going east bound on Route 44, Main Street”.
Police Cornachio was told by the store owner that she struck a vehicle on her way out of the convenience store parking lot. Canton Police searched the vehicle and saw her car on Route 44, near the intersection of River Road (Route 179), some 12 miles from the Winsted Citgo station. She was issued a field sobriety test which she failed after which Cornachio was taken into custody and charged with drunken driving and 2 counts of risk of injury to a minor.
Connecticut Children’s Medical Center said that they are still in the process of collecting information.
